Quick answer: An iPad that won't charge usually has a dirty or damaged charging port, a faulty cable or adapter, or a worn-out battery. Try a different cable and wall adapter, then check the port for lint. If it still won't charge, the port or battery needs repair.
Why won't my iPad charge?
The most common causes, from simplest to most serious, are a bad cable, a weak or incompatible adapter, lint packed into the port, a damaged port, and a battery that can no longer hold a charge.
What should I try first?
- Use a different cable and a different wall adapter, plugged straight into the wall.
- Power the iPad off and look into the charging port with a light. Lint is common.
- If you see lint, gently remove it with a wooden or plastic toothpick. Never use metal.
- Force restart the iPad, then try charging again.
Is it the charging port or the battery?
- Charges only at a certain angle, or the cable feels loose: likely the charging port
- Charges, but drains fast or shuts off with charge left: likely the battery
- Nothing happens with any cable or adapter: could be either, and needs a diagnosis
How do I get it repaired?
Charging port and battery repairs are both covered on our iPad repair in Houston page. We diagnose first so you only pay for the part that's actually failing.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my iPad say Not Charging?
It often means the charger isn't supplying enough power, such as a low-power USB port. Switch to a wall adapter to check.
Can a bad cable damage my iPad?
A worn or poor-quality cable can stop charging or wear down the port over time, so replace damaged cables.
Is there a warranty on the repair?
Yes: 90 days on aftermarket parts, or one year with OEM parts.
